Cloudflare Registrar is run by Cloudflare, Inc., the listed infrastructure company founded in 2009. The registrar itself launched in 2018 on one promise. Domains at wholesale cost, no markup, ever. It is ICANN accredited, and the parent company is 17 years old.
The pricing model is what sets it apart. Cloudflare passes through the exact registry fee plus the mandatory $0.18 ICANN fee. For a .com that comes to $10.44 a year. Your renewal price equals your registration price. No introductory discount that balloons later. No surprise fee at year two.
There is one hard requirement, and you want to know it before signing up. Cloudflare Registrar only works if your domain uses Cloudflare's nameservers. You cannot point the domain at Route53, DigitalOcean DNS or anything else. There is no workaround. If you need that freedom, this registrar is not for you.

Why Your At Cost Price Rises On 1 November 2026

Verisign runs the .com registry. On 23 April 2026 it announced a 7 percent rise, taking the wholesale .com fee from $10.26 to $10.97 a year with effect from 1 November 2026. Cloudflare adds no margin, so it passes the registry price straight through. A .com that costs $10.44 today will cost $11.15 from that date, which is the new wholesale fee plus the same $0.18 ICANN fee.
This is what at cost really means. It cuts both ways. You never pay a registrar markup on top. You also get no shelter when the registry lifts its own price, because there is no margin left for anyone to absorb it. Verisign may take another 7 percent in each remaining year of its contract, which would put the wholesale fee at $13.42. Registering or renewing before 1 November holds the current rate for another year.

Registration and Dashboard Experience

Registering a domain through Cloudflare is instant. You search for your domain in the dashboard, pick your TLD, pay, and it is live. The interface is functional but not exactly beginner-friendly. Cloudflare's dashboard is built for developers, and navigating to the registrar section requires clicking through several menus. If you have never used Cloudflare before, expect a learning curve getting oriented.

Security and Privacy Features

Every domain gets free WHOIS privacy redaction, which hides your personal name, address, and phone number from public WHOIS lookups. DNSSEC is also enabled by default, protecting your visitors from DNS spoofing attacks. Domain hijacking protection is built in. These are features that competitors like Namecheap charge extra for or bury in higher-tier plans.
Reddit users raise one odd complaint. You cannot turn WHOIS privacy off. For most founders that will never matter. Some businesses do need public registration records for compliance or verification, and for them it is a real limit.

The Nameserver Lock-in Problem

This is the single biggest limitation. When you register a domain with Cloudflare, you must use Cloudflare's DNS. Full stop. If your stack requires AWS Route53 for latency-based routing, or you use a managed WordPress host that needs its own nameservers, Cloudflare Registrar will not work. You would need to register elsewhere and optionally use Cloudflare as a CDN layer instead.

Customer Support

Support is listed as 24/7, but that is misleading for free and paid non-enterprise users. We submitted a test ticket through the dashboard and received a generic automated response. Reddit threads are full of users reporting the same experience: automated replies, no escalation path, and weeks of waiting. Enterprise customers get dedicated support. Everyone else gets a knowledge base and community forums.
The BBB lists 122 complaints, and Trustpilot sits at 1.5 from 1,189 reviews. That is a grim picture of support across Cloudflare's products. Here is when it bites. If an automated system flags your domain or locks your account, getting that undone without enterprise support can take weeks.

Ecosystem Integration

If you already run Cloudflare for CDN, WAF or Workers, keeping the domain in the same dashboard is genuinely convenient. DNS changes propagate in seconds. Cloudflare charges exactly what the registry charges. A .com is $10.44 a year to register and the same to renew, with WHOIS privacy and DNSSEC free. Nothing else prices like that. The tradeoff is serious. You cannot use outside nameservers, and if your account goes wrong, reaching a human is close to impossible without an enterprise plan. We recommend it to founders already running their site through Cloudflare, and not as a general purpose registrar.
