Namecheap is an ICANN accredited domain registrar founded in 2000 by Richard Kirkendall. It is based in Phoenix, Arizona. It is the second largest registrar in the world, with more than 24 million domains under management. In September 2025, CVC Capital Partners took a majority stake at a $1.5 billion valuation, with Kirkendall keeping a significant holding. He stepped down as CEO about three months later and was replaced by Hillan Klein.

Namecheap publishes $18.48 a year on its own .com pricing page, and the mandatory $0.20 ICANN fee sits on top, so holding the domain costs $18.68 a year from year two onward. Watch out for the $14.98 figure that circulates in a lot of reviews, including older versions of this one. That is the list REGISTRATION price, not the renewal.
What Sets It Apart
Free lifetime WHOIS privacy on every eligible domain is the standout. Most competitors, GoDaddy included, still charge $10 to $15 a year for it. Over five years that is $50 to $75 saved per domain. Namecheap also includes free DNSSEC, domain lock, and URL and email forwarding on every registration. None of it is an add on.
Recent Ownership Change
Namecheap has been under private equity control since September 2025, and the founder left about three months after that. This matters. Searching for a domain on Namecheap is fast. We typed in our test domain and had results in under 2 seconds, with pricing for .com, .net, .org and dozens of other endings. Checkout took about 4 minutes from search to confirmation email. One annoyance stands out. The results page prints the promotional first year price in large text and the renewal rate in smaller type underneath, so you have to look for the number you will actually pay in year two.
DNS Management and Dashboard
The dashboard is clean for basic jobs. Pointing nameservers, editing DNS records and toggling domain lock all sit where you expect, and we added an A record and a CNAME without trouble. Advanced users on Reddit call the interface increasingly cluttered next to Cloudflare's DNS panel. The mobile split is stark. The iOS app rates 4.8 stars and the Android app sits at 2.5, which points to a rough time on Android.
