QuickBooks Review 2026
Your accountant already uses it, and that is the main reason to pay $38 a month for a tool whose list price rose again this year.

How We Tested QuickBooks
We signed up for a QuickBooks Simple Start account at $38 a month and went through the full onboarding flow. We noted every upsell screen, pre-checked add-on, and promotional pricing gate. We connected a test bank account, created sample invoices, ran reconciliation reports, and submitted a support inquiry during business hours to time the response. Plan prices were re-read at quickbooks.intuit.com on September 5, 2026.
QuickBooks Overview
What QuickBooks Is
QuickBooks Online is cloud bookkeeping software from Intuit, a company founded in 1983. It is a self-service tool, not a managed bookkeeping service. You do your own books unless you pay for Intuit Expert bookkeeping, which starts at $59 a month for coaching or $300 a month for a bookkeeper who does the work.
Who It's Built For
QuickBooks suits small businesses that have outgrown spreadsheets and need real double-entry accounting. It works best for teams of 2 to 25 users who share books with an outside CPA. Intuit now offers a free tier, capped at 2 invoices a month and 1 bank connection, with no accountant access, no mobile app and no integrations. A solo freelancer can start at $0 and meets the $38 a month Simple Start price when those caps bite.
How It Handles Bookkeeping
At the software level, QuickBooks pulls in bank feeds, sorts transactions with AI, builds profit and loss reports, and sends invoices. The AI sorting got about 1 in 3 of our test transactions wrong, so you will need to review its work. For hands-off books, the Expert Full Service add-on gives you a dedicated bookkeeper from $300 a month, after a cleanup fee that starts at $600.
What Makes It Different
The single biggest advantage is the ecosystem. Nearly every CPA in the U.S. works with QuickBooks files. Intuit lists over 800 app integrations, including Stripe, Gusto, Shopify, and most major banks. No competitor in this category matches that reach.

What QuickBooks Actually Costs
True Cost Analysis
Monthly Fee
$38
Standard plan pricing
Annual Plan
$456
If paid annually
True cost is the Simple Start plan at the list price of $38 a month for 12 months, $456. It excludes the promotion Intuit was running when we checked on September 5, 2026, 50 percent off for 3 months, and assumes no payroll or bookkeeper add-ons. Taking the promo instead of the 30 day trial makes year one $399.
QuickBooks Pricing Plans

Pros
- Nearly universal CPA compatibility. Your accountant almost certainly already works with QuickBooks, which saves file conversion at tax time.
- Over 800 app integrations, more than any competitor in the bookkeeping category.
- The feature set scales from simple invoicing on the $38 a month plan to accrual accounting, inventory and project profitability on the $140 Plus plan.
- Mobile apps rated 4.6 on iOS and 4.7 on Android, with working invoicing and receipt capture on the go.
Cons
- Unpredictable price rises. Intuit lifted three of its four paid plans in 2026, and the U.S. Trustpilot profile for Intuit sits at 1.1 from 1,488 reviews.
- Support is thin for the price. Phone support comes with any paid plan, but priority support and training are reserved for the $340 a month Advanced tier.
- The AI auto-categorization is overconfident and got about a third of our test transactions wrong, creating more cleanup than it saves.
- A bookkeeper who actually does your books costs from $300 a month, after a cleanup fee that starts at $600. Those two prices sit on separate pages, not on the pricing grid.
Upsell Pressure & Hidden Fees
Transparency Check, We Documented Every Upsell
QuickBooks leads with promotional pricing on its pricing page, 50 percent off for 3 months when we checked on September 5, 2026. That hides the real recurring rate of $38 a month and up. During checkout and inside the dashboard we were pitched payroll and payments. Payroll is sold as a bundle. Workforce Payroll plus Simple Start is $88 a month plus $7 per employee, so payroll adds $50 a month and $7 a head over the software. QuickBooks Payments takes a cut of every transaction. The biggest upsell is the bookkeeper. Expert Assisted is coaching at $59 a month after a 30 day trial. Expert Full Service Bookkeeping starts at $300 a month and only begins after a cleanup fee that starts at $600 and rises with the months of backlog. None of these were pre-checked at checkout, but the in-app nudges are persistent.

What Real Customers Say
Reddit / Community Sentiment
Two things repeat in founder threads. Accountants ask for QuickBooks by name, so switching away means arguing with your CPA. And Intuit raises prices, three of four paid plans went up in 2026, and support agents read from a script. The U.S. registered Intuit profile on Trustpilot is at 1.1 from 1,488 reviews, while the larger quickbooks.intuit.com profile sits at 3.7 from 16,900. Most people who stay do so because their accountant already lives in it.
Is QuickBooks Right for You?
Best For These Founders
The Scaling Agency
Needs custom user roles, workflow automation and detailed reports for a growing team. That is the $340 a month Advanced plan, with 25 users and 3 accountant seats.
The Inventory-Heavy Retailer
Needs built-in inventory tracking, purchase orders and cost of goods sold. Those start on the $140 a month Plus plan.
The Funded Startup
Needs books that outside CPAs, investors and bookkeepers already know. Over 800 integrations and 2 accountant seats on every paid plan cover that.
Consider Alternatives If…
You are a solo freelancer who needs simple invoicing and would rather pay $0 at Wave than $38 a month here.
You want plain software without a steep learning curve or feature bloat.
You have a tight software budget and cannot absorb a $10 to $65 a month price rise at renewal.
Setup and Bank Connection
Account creation took under 5 minutes. QuickBooks asked for basic business details, then prompted us to connect a bank account. The bank sync worked on the first try and pulled in transactions within a few hours. The onboarding wizard works but it is cluttered. We counted 6 prompts to explore paid add-ons before we reached the main dashboard.
Invoicing and Expense Tracking
Invoicing is solid. You can customize templates, set up recurring invoices, and take card payments through QuickBooks Payments for a per-transaction fee. Expense tracking through bank feeds works well in theory. In practice the AI sorting got about 1 in 3 of our test transactions wrong. You will spend time fixing categories, which undoes some of the time the automation saves.
Reporting and Reconciliation
This is where QuickBooks earns its reputation. The report set is wide, profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flow, receivables aging and custom reports. Reconciliation is simple once your bank feed is connected. Accrual accounting, inventory and cost of goods sold need the Plus plan at $140 a month or above.
Human Bookkeeper (Intuit Experts)
Intuit renamed QuickBooks Live. It is now Intuit Experts, in two tiers. Expert Assisted at $59 a month, free for 30 days, gives you certified bookkeepers to coach you, but they do not do your books. Expert Full Service Bookkeeping starts at $300 a month and only begins after Expert Cleanup, which starts at $600 and rises with the number of months to clean. So the cheapest first year with a bookkeeper is $4,200, on top of the software. Tax filing is not included in either tier.
Integrations
Intuit lists over 800 apps. During testing we confirmed working links with Stripe, Square, Gusto, Shopify, and PayPal. Depth varies. Some sync both ways, others push one way and need manual reconciliation. If you run an online store or use more than one payment processor, QuickBooks is the safest bet for compatibility. The free plan gets none of them.
Support Quality
Standard support runs Monday to Friday, 6am to 6pm PT, with Saturday hours from 6am to 3pm PT. Priority support and training need the Advanced plan at $340 a month. We sent a test question on a Wednesday afternoon and waited 38 minutes for a callback. The agent was polite, read from a script, and could not answer a question about accrual journal entries. That matches what founders report, agents know the menus and little beyond them.
QuickBooks vs. Top Competitors
| Service | Learn More | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
QuickBooks Most Recognized $38 3.0 | $38 | $456 | 3.0 | Growing businesses and teams that work closely with external accountants. | Current Review |
Wave $0 3.5 | $0 | $0 | 3.5 | Truly free basic bookkeeping | |
FreshBooks $23 3.3 | $23 | $248.40 | 3.3 | Service businesses focused on invoicing |
Final Verdict
QuickBooks is the accounting software your CPA already knows, and that alone keeps it the default for growing businesses. Customer scores are poor for a product this dominant, 3.7 from 16,900 reviews on the main Trustpilot profile and 1.1 on the U.S. registered one. The feature set is deep, from accrual accounting to inventory. But Intuit raised 3 of its 4 paid plans in 2026 and pushes add-ons hard, so your real annual spend will likely beat your budget. We recommend it for teams that need multi-user access and tight CPA collaboration. Solo founders should look at Wave or FreshBooks first.
