How We Tested Northwest Registered Agent

We opened a test account and ran the full Northwest checkout for a new LLC. We logged every optional add-on and what each one cost. We also called the Corporate Guides to time their replies. That took about 60 hours. Nothing arrived pre-checked.

Northwest Registered Agent Overview

Northwest packs more into its entry fee than anyone else we tested. The $39 formation package, plus state fees, carries what they call a Business Identity. That means a business address you can put on filings and marketing, a domain name, a hosted website, an email address, and a phone service. There are two tiers above it. An EIN and a prepared operating agreement come with the $139 package, and same-day processing with the $199 one.

Built for Privacy

Your state puts a mailing address on the public record when you form an LLC. Northwest lets you use its address instead, in all 50 states. That is the part data brokers scrape. Keeping your own street address off it also cuts the junk mail that follows a new filing.

Included With Every Formation

Every formation includes a free year of registered agent service and renewal reminders. Legal and state mail is scanned to your account at no extra charge. The free business address is capped. It scans five pieces of other mail a year.

Their motto is that they are just not annoying. Our testing matched it. Filing was fast, the compliance reminders arrived, and nobody tried to sell us a tier we did not need. That makes them a strong fit for a first business, where the hard part is knowing which $50 add-on you actually need.

What Northwest Registered Agent Actually Costs

True Cost Analysis

Year 1 Total Cost

$149

Includes all fees + state filing

Year 2+ Annual Cost

$125

Recurring renewal fees

Year 1 is the flat $39 formation fee plus the $110 Delaware filing fee we use as the state proxy. Year 2 onward is the $125 agent renewal. Northwest has held that price for 20 years. At five or more states it drops to $100 per state. State taxes sit outside both numbers. A Delaware LLC owes $400 every June and files no annual report.

Cons

  • Same-day processing only comes with the $199 Premium package.
  • The free business address scans just five pieces of mail a year, unlimited scanning is $20 a month.
  • Customer support is not available on weekends.

Upsell Pressure & Hidden Fees

Transparency Check, We Documented Every Upsell

Northwest labels and prices its add-ons at checkout. The EIN service is $50 with a Social Security number and $200 without, and you can add it to the $39 package at checkout. That matters. Paying $39 plus $50 comes to $89, while the $139 Deluxe package buys the same EIN plus a prepared operating agreement. Northwest publishes operating agreement templates free. So Deluxe asks $50 more for a document you can download. The Identity Services stay free for as long as you keep them. Domain renewal is covered, and nothing converts to a paid plan on its own. The paid versions are monthly upgrades you choose. The free phone line is capped at 10 calls and 10 texts a month, unlimited is $9 a month. The free hosting plan gives you 250 MB of storage and 1 GB of bandwidth. The next step up is the $9 a month Essentials plan.

The praise that repeats in founder threads is about what does not happen. No upsell calls, no renewal surprise. The complaint that repeats is cancellation, which needs a phone call or an email rather than a dashboard click. Northwest shows 4.7 out of 5 from 1,861 Google reviewers on its own site, and Trustpilot sits lower at 4.2 from 269.

Is Northwest Registered Agent Right for You?

Best For These Founders

Privacy-Conscious Founders

Founders who want Northwest's address on the public record instead of their own, in all 50 states.

First-Time Business Owners

Founders who want a named Corporate Guide on the phone rather than a ticket queue.

Multi State Operators

Owners expanding past four states, where the agent price drops to $100 per state.

Consider Alternatives If…

  • You are looking for the absolute cheapest budget LLC formation option available.

  • You need access to ongoing complex legal counsel or attorney consultations.

  • You require 24/7 customer support outside of standard business hours.

The Corporate Guide Experience

Support is where Northwest pulls ahead. Instead of a general call centre you get a named Corporate Guide based in the US. They know the filing rules and the tax quirks of the state you are asking about, which is not true of every queue we have called.

The team was patient with basic questions. Guides answer Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm ET. There is no weekend cover. For a first time founder the weekday help is worth more than the missing hours cost.

What You Get in the Box

Operating Agreement Templates

These are free to anyone. A prepared agreement is part of the $139 package, not the $39 one.

1 Year Registered Agent

Included free for the first year, then renews at $125 annually.

Mail Scanning

Legal and state mail is scanned free. The free business address covers five other pieces a year.

Business Identity Bundle

A custom domain, hosted website, professional email, and phone number for your business.

Renewal Reminders

Automated alerts before state deadlines so you never lose good standing.

What the $39 package leaves out

Northwest publishes its own package grid, and it is the clearest answer. Formation, the registered agent year and lifetime support all come with the $39 Basic tier. An EIN and a prepared operating agreement start at $139. Same-day processing is $199 only.

Northwest Registered Agent package grid showing Basic at 39 dollars crossed against EIN, operating agreement and same-day processing, Deluxe at 139 dollars adding EIN and operating agreement, and Premium at 199 dollars adding same-day processing

What Northwest costs across several states

Northwest charges $125 a year per state for one to four states. At five or more it falls to $100 per state. The step lands so that four states and five states both cost $500. The fifth agent is free. Founders who expand tend to move every state here rather than juggle one agent per state.

Bar chart of Northwest registered agent cost per year from one to eight states. One state costs $125, rising to $500 at four states, staying at $500 at five states where the per state price drops to $100, then rising to $800 at eight states.
Northwest's own published agent pricing, read on August 15, 2026. State filing fees and annual state taxes are separate.

Cancellation Process

Cancelling takes a phone call or an email. There is no dashboard button. We confirmed that while testing the account. The agent renews at $125 each year, so call before that date rather than after it. A gap in agent coverage is what costs an LLC its good standing.

Final Verdict

4.8 / 5

Northwest is our top pick for LLC formation. The $39 package carries a business address, domain, website, email, phone line and mail scanning, plus the filing itself and a year of registered agent service. An EIN and a prepared operating agreement sit in the $139 package, not this one. It is privately held, and the Corporate Guides know the state rules they are quoting. The dashboard is plain rather than polished. At $125 a year to renew, that is a fair trade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Northwest is a good fit for most LLCs and it is our top pick. Forming costs $39 plus your state filing fee. Keeping the agent costs $125 a year, a price held for 20 years. Nothing is pre-checked at checkout. It suits you least if you shop on the headline number alone, because services advertising $0 formation often renew higher than Northwest does.

Northwest is a legitimate US company. It has been forming businesses since 1998 and files in all 50 states. The work is handled in house, and every document is scanned in the office that receives it rather than sent to a third party. Support goes to a named Corporate Guide, not a call centre. Our own checkout test found no pre-checked add-ons.

Northwest costs $39 plus your state filing fee in year one. From year two it is $125 a year for the registered agent. State taxes are separate. On Delaware's $110 filing fee that comes to $149 up front. The $125 also carries the business address, domain, website, email, phone line and mail scanning. Northwest also sells a $139 package that adds an EIN and a prepared operating agreement, and a $199 one that adds same-day processing.

Every US state makes an LLC or corporation name a registered agent with a physical street address in that state. The appointment is not optional. You may serve as your own agent for free anywhere. The cost of that is your street address on the public record, plus being reachable there in business hours. That trade is why home based founders pay around $125 a year instead.

Cancelling takes a phone call or an email to support. There is no one click button in the dashboard, which our team confirmed while testing it. The agent service renews annually at $125, so cancel ahead of the renewal date rather than after it. Name your replacement agent first. A gap in agent coverage is what puts an LLC out of good standing.

Northwest puts its own business address on your formation documents instead of your home address, in all 50 states. There is no privacy upsell. It keeps your street address off the entity record that data brokers scrape. Read your own state form before you assume you are covered, because several states ask for a member or manager address in a separate field, and an agent address does not fill it.
