How We Tested ADP Run
We requested a custom quote through ADP's sales process. We explored the RUN self-led demo and documented each upsell screen. On 3 September 2026 we re-verified every number here at its source, ADP's own RUN packages page for the 4 plans and the 900,000 client count, and Trustpilot, TrustRadius, ConsumerAffairs and G2 for the ratings. Capterra came off. Its badge is no longer on ADP's page and its product listing returns a 404. Where a widely repeated claim had no primary source behind it, the monthly price and the contract length, we removed it rather than repeat it.
ADP Run Overview
ADP Run is payroll software for businesses with 1 to 49 employees. The company has run payroll since 1949. Over 900,000 small businesses use RUN today, and it handles pay runs, direct deposit, federal and state tax filing, new hire reporting, and W-2 and 1099 forms in all 50 states.
Now the part every other review gets wrong. ADP does not publish a price. Not a starting price, not a range, nothing. Every button on the RUN packages page says Get Pricing, and it means it. You talk to a sales rep or you do not learn the number. On 3 September 2026 the page was also offering 3 months free to new sign ups until September 24, terms apply. Free months on an unpublished price are still an unpublished price, so get the month 4 figure in writing.
The web is full of ADP prices anyway. One site says $59 to $79 a month plus $4 per employee. Google's answer box currently quotes $5 per employee. Our own title said $59 until today. We chased all of them to their sources and found blogs citing blogs, with nothing underneath. So we removed our number. We cannot tell you what ADP costs, and neither can anyone else quoting one.
ADP Run Pricing Plans
ADP Run Pros and Cons
Pros
- Automated tax filing covers federal, state, and local taxes in all 50 states, and ADP takes liability for penalties caused by its own errors.
- Scales from 1 employee on RUN up to ADP Workforce Now past 49, without changing providers mid year.
- Mobile app lets you run full payroll remotely, and the RUN & Done feature auto-processes recurring salaried payroll.
- Contractor and W-2 employee payments process in a single payroll run.
Cons
- No public pricing. You must enter a sales funnel and negotiate a quote, making cost comparison difficult.
- Time tracking, benefits admin, workers' comp, and retirement are all paid add-ons that inflate your real monthly cost beyond the base quote.
- Trustpilot score of 1.2/5 from 3,089 reviews of ADP the company, with recurring complaints about billing, hold times, and upselling.
- ADP does not publish its contract term, renewal notice window, or early termination fee anywhere on its site.
- PTO tracking is clunky. Reviewers on TrustRadius and G2 flag difficulty checking remaining balances during payroll.
Upsell Pressure & Hidden Fees
Transparency Check, We Documented Every Upsell
ADP's base payroll plan covers standard pay runs and tax filing. That is all. Time tracking, benefits administration, workers' compensation, and retirement plans are separate paid add-ons. Users report extra charges for off-cycle payroll runs, year-end W-2 and 1099 processing, and account setup that are not disclosed upfront. Trustpilot and G2 reviewers flag that ADP agents push additional services during routine support calls. ADP does not publish its contract term or its early termination fee, and we could not verify the 36 month figure quoted across the web at any primary source, so ask for the term, the notice window, and the termination fee in the written agreement before you sign.

Reddit / Community Sentiment
Users praise ADP Run for its clean interface, a mobile app that runs a full payroll, and tax filing they can trust. The complaints are about money. Threads flag a high base cost, add-on fees, and support calls that turn into sales calls, and the 1.2 Trustpilot score comes up in most of them.

Why ADP Scores 1.2 and 4.7 at the Same Time
ADP holds a 1.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 3,089 reviews. It also holds a 4.7 out of 5 on G2 from 6,332 reviews. Both are real. We checked both on 3 September 2026.
The gap is scope. Trustpilot rates adp.com, the whole company, 77 years of it. That includes enterprise contracts, the tax notice department, and every billing dispute since 2016. The people who write there are usually angry about an invoice. G2 and TrustRadius rate RUN, the small business product. Their reviewers use it on Tuesday mornings, and they rate the software.
So read them as two questions. Is the payroll tool good? The product raters say yes, consistently, 4.5 and up. Is ADP pleasant to be a customer of? The company raters say no, loudly, at 1.2. Our own scorecard splits the same way, 4.0 for ease of use and 1.3 for pricing transparency. ConsumerAffairs sits between the two, 4.3 from 2,320 reviews of ADP payroll.

What We Could Not Verify
ADP does not publish its contract terms either. Reviews across the web state that RUN locks you into 36 months with auto renewal and an early termination fee. We went looking for the source. It is not on the packages page, not in ADP's terms, not anywhere on adp.com, and the blogs asserting it cite each other. One of them says the opposite, that RUN can be cancelled any time.
We will not print a contract length we cannot source. Here is what to do instead. Before you sign, ask the rep for the term, the renewal notice window, and the termination fee, and ask for all three in the written agreement. If the rep will not put a number in the contract, that is your answer about the number.
Dashboard and Payroll Processing
The RUN dashboard is clean. Shortcuts sit along the top, a left sidebar covers payroll, taxes, and HR, and the main screen shows a to-do list, calendar, and upcoming payrolls. Running a standard payroll takes a few clicks. The system flags employee records that need attention before you approve, which catches missing tax IDs and expired direct deposit details before they become a problem.
ADP lets you pay contractors and W-2 employees in the same run. Most competitors make you process those separately. The RUN and Done feature handles salaried teams. If hours do not change, ADP processes payroll on its own and emails a preview the day before.
Tax Filing and Multi-State Compliance
Every RUN plan includes federal, state, and local tax calculation, quarterly Form 941 filing, and year end W-2 and 1099 generation. ADP takes liability for penalties caused by its own filing errors. If you have staff in several states, the platform tracks the different rates, unemployment insurance, and local rules for each. This is what 77 years buys. It is the strongest thing on this page.
It also keeps working as you grow. RUN covers 1 to 49 employees, and past that ADP moves you onto ADP Workforce Now rather than making you change providers and re-file everything mid year. If you expect to cross 49, that continuity is worth real money.
You still owe the IRS the money on time. A filing service files. It does not fund. Check the IRS deposit schedule for your deposit frequency, because the penalty for a late deposit lands on you.
Mobile App and Employee Self-Service
The ADP mobile app runs payroll, approves time-off requests, and shows reports from a phone. Employees get pay stubs, W-2s, and their own details through a self-service portal. Reviewers rate the app highly, and it is one of the few places where the 1.2 crowd and the 4.7 crowd agree. Some reviewers report lag. It varies by device.
Add-On Costs and What Is Not Included
The Essential plan covers payroll and tax filing. That is the whole list. Time and attendance tracking, health benefits administration, workers' compensation, retirement plans, and background checks are all separate paid add-ons. Off-cycle runs and year end processing can carry their own fees.

Customer Support Reality
ADP advertises 24/7 support on every RUN plan. That availability covers payroll questions. HR issues, benefits, and technical problems outside payroll take longer, and support quality tracks whether you have a dedicated account manager, which higher tiers get more often. Support is also the loudest theme in the 1.2 Trustpilot reviews. Weigh the 24/7 promise against what those 3,089 people say happened when they called.

Final Verdict
ADP Run does the job. Tax filing across 50 states with ADP carrying the liability is hard to beat. The dashboard is quick and the app works. We rate it 2.8 out of 5. Almost all of that loss is the buying experience, not the software. You cannot see a price. You cannot see a contract term. And the company selling it holds a 1.2 on Trustpilot from 3,089 reviewers who mostly wanted to talk about billing. Buy it for the compliance, negotiate hard, and get every number in writing first.
